Lieutenant Michael Smethurst in the turret of his Sherman and 'A' Squadron tanks waiting at Hilvarenbeek, October 1944
Photograph by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters), World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.
The Sherman, from 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry, is being passed by troop-carrying Kangaroos from 15th Scottish Division. The Kangaroo was based on a converted Sherman or Ram tank chassis. Protected with thicker armour and more mobile than the Bren Carrier, the kangaroo was an ideal vehicle for transporting tank supporting infantry. It could carry 11 men plus two crew.
From an album containing 222 photographs compiled by Major Wilfred Herbert James Sale, MC, 3rd/4th County of London Yeomanry (Sharpshooters).
