23rd Indian Division was posted to the frontiers of Assam and Burma in May 1942 where it played a key role in halting the Japanese drive on India. During the following two years and three months the division fought in the jungles of Burma. For all but five months of that time they were stationed in the front line. The division finished the campaign near Rangoon and in August 1944 was withdrawn to India. During its service in Assam and Burma the 23rd sustained nearly 3000 casualties of whom 605 were killed in action.
