'Mackeson's bridge and ascent beyond, looking towards Ali Musjid', 1878

Photograph by John Burke, 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880), 1878.

A column of troops advance through the Khyber Pass towards the fort of Ali Masjid along the road and bridge built during the 1st Afghan War (1839-1842) by Colonel Frederick Mackeson (1807-1853). Burke accompanied the Peshawar Valley Field Force as an unofficial photographer and produced many striking images of the 2nd Afghan War.
