Nine pounder guns of the Royal Artillery attached to the 3rd Division, 1855 (c)

Photograph by James Robertson (1813-1888), Crimean War, 1855 (c).

In decline since the end of the Napoleonic Wars, British artillery enjoyed something of a renaissance during the Crimean War. During the conflict the British fielded a wide variety of artillery pieces. Field guns, such the nine pounders depicted in this photograph, would have been used in open battle firing either round shot, each weighing nine pounds, for maximum range or, common case, canister or shrapnel to inflict damage on troops at closer quarters.

One of four photographs collected by Colonel W R Needham, Royal Artillery.
