The Vorontsov Ravine: 'The Valley of Death', 1855

Photograph by James Robertson (1813-1888), Crimean War, 1855.

The Vorontsov Ravine, to the rear of the British right attack on Sevastopol, was given the name 'Valley of the Shadow of Death' because of the enormous number of Russian shot and shells fired from the Malakhov which overshot their target and rolled into it.

From an album of 22 photographs compiled by Colonel H Smythe, 68th (Durham) Regiment of Foot (Light Infantry).
