The Munchee Bau or old Citadel of Lucknow, 1858

Photograph by Felice Beato (1825-1907), Indian Mutiny (1857-1859), 1858.

This building was abandoned by Sir Henry Lawrence and partly-blown up when he took up his position in the Residency. The mutineers began attacking the Residency compound on 4 July 1857. Lawrence, Chief Commissioner of Oudh, was killed almost immediately when a shell exploded in the room where he was resting. Command passed to Colonel John Inglis of the 32nd Foot, which formed the main British part of the garrison.
