'View from the Ochterlony Monument', Calcutta, 1865
Photograph by Samuel Bourne (1834-1912), India, Bengal, 1865.
This view across the maidan (open space) forms a section of Bourne's seven-part panorama of Calcutta which was taken from the Ochterlony Monument. During the Raj, many of Calcutta's most important civc and administrative buildings surrounded the Maidan and stretched along Esplanade Row and Chowringhee Road. These handsome buildings earned Calcutta the title of 'City of Palaces'.
From an album of 95 photographs including views of Calcutta taken by Bourne, 1865-1870 (c).
