'The Cathedral and Bishop's Palace Calcutta', 1865
Photograph by Samuel Bourne (1834-1912), India, Bengal, 1865.
Completed in 1847 in Gothic revival style, the Anglican cathedral of St. Paul's was designed by Major William Nairn Forbes and C. K. Robinson. The tower was rebuilt following the 1934 Calcutta earthquake.
The neo-classical Bishop's Palace, visible to the right of the cathedral in this image, was purchased by Bishop Wilson in 1849, replacing an earlier palace that had been in use since 1825.
From an album of 95 photographs including views of Calcutta taken by Bourne, 1865-1870 (c).
