Spine pad, with ties, 1900 (c)

Spine pads were worn on the spine over the uniform. They were thought to protect the spine from the harmful rays of the sun. This example was used by Major-General Aldred Frederick Beresford Lumley, 10th Earl of Scarbrough, during the Boer War (1899-1902).
