Wounded German prisoner near Aveluy Wood, September 1916

Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.

Aveluy Wood was located to the north of Albert in the British sector on the Somme. A cemetery was established there in the weeks leading up to 1 July 1916 and a field ambulance was later located there. The Germans captured the wood during their Spring Offensive of 1918 but the Allies re-took it in September of that year.

From a box of 72 lantern slides.
