A bakery behind the lines, 1917

Lantern slide, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1917.

The British and Imperial troops on the Western Front required a vast amount of bread. Every man was supposed to receive 20 ounces a day. To meet this demand bakers worked in bakeries behind the lines. They were among the thousands of men and women employed in cooking and supplying food to the front line soldiery.

From a box of 80 lantern slides.
