'Mr Ben Tillett admires the Bosche Pills', 1916

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.

Ben Tillett was a veteran trade unionist and one of the founders of the Labour Party. He is shown here looking at 15-inch howitzer shells during a visit to Martinsart, located to the north of Albert on the Somme, in the autumn of 1916. Tillett dropped his pre-war internationalism and pacifism and actively supported the British war-effort, becoming a campaigner for better munitions supplies.

One of 193 British and Allied official photographs taken on the Western Front.
