Panoramic view of British troops on the Somme, 1 July 1916

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1916.

Visible as dots just below the horizon, the British soldiers are attacking German trenches near Mametz during the opening day of the Somme offensive. Trench lines, clearly marked by the white chalk excavated during their construction, are visible in the foreground.
