Watercolour by Major B D A Donne, 10th Sudanese Battalion, 1888.
A supply train on its way to the outlying forts can be seen in the foreground. Part of the Egyptian Army, the 10th Sudanese Battalion was recruited in the Sudan but commanded by British officers. It had been raised in 1883 by the then Captain Donne and saw much action in the Sudan from 1884 onwards where it acquitted itself well against Mahdist forces.
