King's African Rifleman covering a road with his rifle, 1943 (c)

The soldier is armed with a Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) Rifle, the standard infantry weapon of the Commonwealth's armies during World War Two. The King's African Rifles fought against the Italians in Italian Somaliland and Ethiopia during the East African campaign, against the Vichy French in Madagascar, and against the Japanese in Burma.
