Despite material weaknesses in the early stages of the Second World War, especially in transport and artillery, the King's African Rifles did not suffer from a shortage of manpower. Africans from the territories of Uganda and Kenya reacted enthusiastically to the call for recruits and the regiment was able to expand rapidly to meet the demands put upon it, firstly in the defence of Kenya, then in the offensive actions in Abyssinia (modern Ethiopia), Madagascar and Burma.
