East India Company's Egypt Medal 1801
Bronze gilt commemorative campaign medal struck at the Calcutta Mint, 1801.
The Persian inscription reads: 'This medal has been presented in commemoration of the defeat of the French Armies in the Kingdom of Egypt by the great bravery of the victorious army of England'.
The reverse depicts a man of war sailing towards the coast of Egypt. The East India Company's Egypt Medal was authorised in July 1802 for award in both gold and silver to Indian troops who had served under Major-General (later General Sir) David Baird (1757-1829) in the Red Sea Contingent during the Egyptian Campaign.
