Rissaldar Unoop Singh, 11th Bengal Lancers, 1860s (c)

Photograph, India, 1860s (c).

A rissaldar was the commander of a risala (mounted troop) and was a rank in the cavalry equivalent to a subadar in the Indian infantry. They were known as Viceroy's Commissioned Officers (VCOs). Unoop Singh is shown here with a young boy, possibly his son.

From an album previously owned by General Sir Sam Browne VC, 1857-1870 (c).
