A Rajput havildar of the 7th (Duke of Connaught's Own) Bengal Native Infantry in full dress, 1887 (c)

Photograph by Johnston and Hoffmann, India, 1887 (c).

From ancient times the Hindu Rajputs were known for their valour and chivalry in battle. Unsurprisingly the British designated them a 'martial race' and subsequently employed large numbers of these famous warriors in the Indian Army.

From a collection of 46 postcard photographs taken by Johnston and Hoffmann, 1887 (c).
