West African casualties awaiting air evacuation, 1944 (c)

Photograph, World War Two, Far East, 1944 (c).

The first few months of fighting in Burma demonstrated the necessity of air evacuation as the isolated locations of many units alongside the lack of roads amid the rough terrain restricted the use of motor transport. In this image wounded soldiers of 81st West African Division are watched over by a British medical officer.

From an album of 36 photographs compiled by Captain E B Mee (later Major), Royal Signals, 81st West African Division, Burma, 1944-1945.
