'Doghandler Pte Pitman & Satan Royal Regt of Wales. Palace Barracks Holywood, Belfast', 12 July 1974

Graphite by Ralph Lillford, 1974.

By September 1971, the Army had 91 German shepherd or Alsatian guard dogs in Northern Ireland. The dog-handler, Private Pitman, would have been on attachment with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

Between 1971 and 1976, drawn by an interest in the civil conflict, Ralph Lillford made repeated trips to Northern Ireland to draw what he saw in the streets.
