Hunting trophies on the wall of Jamrud fort near the entrance to the Khyber Pass, 1929 (c)

Photograph, India, North West Frontier, 1929 (c).

Big game hunting was a popular pastime for officers on leave, involving not only the tracking and stalking of the quarry, but long journeys into remote forest or mountain regions and contact with local people. In the climate of the time, the collection of trophies was considered perfectly proper and was virtually the only way of physically examining specimens: many advances in scientific knowledge were made in this way.

One of 33 photographs relating to Captain (later Brigadier), John R Booth's Indian Army service with the 4th Battalion, 14th Punjab Regiment, during the 1930s.
