Camel transport in the pass between Drazinda and Domanda, Waziristan, 1919
Photograph, North West Frontier, India, 1919.
Camels were ideal for moving supplies in the barren terrain of Waziristan. Because they are so well adapted to desert conditions, are strong and can walk for miles a day, they have been vital beasts of burden in hot countries: the one-hump Arabian camel or dromedary was used as a pack animal by the British and Indian Armies for many years.
From an album of 116 photographs taken and compiled by T M Layng, 62nd Brigade, Waziristan Force, May 1919 to September 1920.
