This sentimental postcard produced during the war reflects the affection felt by many towards horses and the importance of their role in the conflict. However, in November 1918 the Army had far more horses than it needed in peacetime. Around 500,000 horses were sold for work, about 100,000 of these in Britain, the rest abroad. Another 60,000 horses that were not fit for work were sold for meat.
