Military Medal, Private T H Thomas, Middlesex Regiment, 1917
Circular, silver medal with portrait of King George V (first type), on the obverse. On the reverse is the inscription, 'For Bravery in the Field', encircled by a wreath and surmounted by a royal cypher and crown. The recipient's name, rank, unit and number are inscribed on the edge of the medal. The medal is suspended by a red, white and dark blue striped ribbon.
Private Thomas Henry Thomas served in the 2nd/10th Battalion Middlesex Regiment. He joined the Army in 1914 and was posted to the Middle East in 1916, serving in Egypt, Suez and Palestine. Promoted to corporal, he requested to revert to the rank of private on 2 December 1916. The request was granted. Thomas was wounded on 1 April 1917 and awarded the Military Medal on 4 September 1917. He was killed in action in Syria, on 29 December 1917. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Thomas is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.
The Military Medal was a gallantry award for other ranks, established in 1916 (backdated to 1914, the beginning of the First World War) and discontinued in 1993.
