Crimean War Medal 1854-56, with clasp, 'Sebastopol', awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel William Napier, Land Transport Corps
Lieutenant-Colonel (later General) William Craig Emilius Napier (1818-1903) was first commissioned into the 25th (The King's Own Borderers) Regiment of Foot in 1835. He saw active service in Natal and was aide-de-camp to his uncle, Sir Charles Napier (whose daughter he married), during operations on the Indus in 1845. In the Crimean War (1854-1856) he was Assistant Director, Land Transport Corps to his brother-in-law William McMurdo. He ended his active career as a general (1877) and Governor of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst (1875-1882).
