The soldiers depicted belonged to the 4th Battalion, The King's African Rifles, a hostilities only unit raised in August 1940 at Bombo. It was part of 25th (East Africa) Infantry Brigade and saw service against the Italians during the East Africa campaign.
From an album of 40 copy photographs of the campaign of 3/4th King's African Rifles in Abyssinia, culminating in the surrender of Gondar, Abyssinia, 1941.
