Dismounted work, 1902 (c)

Photograph, India, 1902 (c).

Dismounted sowars (cavalrymen) of the 25th Cavalry (Frontier Force) open fire during an exercise. By the 20th century it was common for cavalry to dismount before going into action. The longer range and greater accuracy of modern rifles meant the traditional cavalry charge was gradually disappearing.

From an album of 87 photographs associated with Lieutenant F R Teesdale, 25th Cavalry (Frontier Force), Lahore Cantonment, 1902-1914.
