Turkish Crimean War Medal, 1855, awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel William Napier, Land Transport Corps

Lieutenant-Colonel (later General) William Craig Emilius Napier (1818-1903) was first commissioned into the 25th (The King's Own Borderers) Regiment of Foot in 1835. He saw active service in Natal and was aide-de-camp to his uncle, Sir Charles Napier (whose daughter he married), during operations on the Indus in 1845. In the Crimean War he was Assistant Director, Land Transport Corps to his brother-in-law William McMurdo. He ended his active career as a general (1877) and Governor of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst (1875-1882).
