Officers of B Company, 4th Battalion, The Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment), 26 June 1916

The officers are (from left to right), 2nd Lieutenants Arthur Henry Winn Sampson, and Wilfred John Wood, Lieutenant Adrian Alexander Hope Johnston, 2nd Lieutenant Archibald Francis Campbell Paxton, Captain Octavius Ralph Featherstone Johnston, Lieutenants Douglas Cutbush MC and H M Williams and 2nd Lieutenant Albert Branch.

With the exception of two of the officers, all of the men pictured were killed on 1 July 1916, or subsequently died from wounds sustained that day, when the 4th Battalion suffered heavy losses at Fricourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

Lieutenant Douglas Cutbush was subsequently killed in action near Monchy during the Battle of Arras on 10 April 1917, leaving only Lieutenant H M Williams to survive the war.
