Other ranks' sporran worn by Private S Halstead, Calcutta Scottish Volunteers, 1916 (c)

As many Scottish regiments wore kilts that did not have pockets they used sporrans as a wallet and container for their possessions. The Calcutta Scottish were formed in 1914, becoming part of the Auxiliary Force (India) on the reorganisation of the India volunteer units in 1920.
