'British camp on the Continent', 1914

Photograph, World War One, Western Front (1914-1918), 1914.

British soldiers from a variety of regiments muster at one of the many depots established in France for the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). Comprising only four (later re-enforced to six) infantry and one cavalry divisions, some 90,000 men, the BEF was tiny compared with the conscript German and French armies. Although few in number, the professional soldiers of the BEF were however among the best in Europe.

One of 193 British and Allied official photographs.
