King George V's state coach on route to Parliament, with a Sovereign's Escort of the 1st Life Guards, passing a colour party of the Grenadier Guards. The State Opening ceremony marked the start of a new Parliamentary session and always drew large crowds.

John Richard Lowndes French (1881-1958) was the son of Field Marshal Sir John French, commander of the British Expeditionary Force on the Western Front in 1914-1915, during World War One (1914-1918).
