'Gooldie asleep under shell fire', 1915

Pencil sketch by 2nd Lieutenant Charles Sargeant Jagger, 1915.

On the outbreak of war in 1914 Jagger was studying art in Rome, having won a prestigious scholarship. He returned home and joined the Artists' Rifles. In 1915 he was commissioned into The Worcestershire Regiment and went on to serve at Gallipoli where he made several sketches of his fellow officers, including this one of Lieutenant Leslie Lant Goold. Presumably, 'Gooldie' was Goold's nickname. He went on to win a Military Cross in France in 1917.
