Military Medal awarded to Native Pioneer Sergeant Kioko, East Africa Pioneer Company, 1918

Circular, silver gallantry medal designed by Sir Edgar Bertram MacKennal (1863-1931), with a portrait of King George V (first type, without crown), on the obverse, with the inscription 'Georgivs V Britt: Omn: Rex et Ind: Imp'. On the reverse is the inscription, 'For Bravery in the Field', encircled by a wreath and surmounted by a royal cypher and crown. The recipient's name and rank is inscribed on the edge of the medal. The medal is suspended by a red, white and dark blue striped ribbon.

Kioko's award of the Military Medal is recorded in the 'London Gazette' of 29 August 1918.

The East African Pioneer Company was part of General Jacob Van Deventer's Force formed in 1916 with the aim of driving the Germans out of German East Africa. It is thought that Kioko took part in a number guerrilla actions and pitched battles where British Forces suffered many casualties. Kioko award of the Military Medal in recorded in the London Gazette on 29 August 1918.

The Military Medal was awarded to British Army personnel and other arms of the armed forces, other ranks, for bravery in battle on land and whilst under fire. Established on 25 March 1916, with retrospective application to 1914, it could only be awarded to men until a Royal Warrant of 21 June 1916 extended eligibility to include women. It was discontinued in 1993 and replaced by the Military Cross which was extended to all ranks.
