'Out into the sandy deserts of Somaliland an Indian Camel Corps in pursuit of the Mullah', 1903 (c)

Wash drawing by Arthur Garrett.

The Camel Corps were then engaged in the campaign against Somali forces led by Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan (1856-1920). Labelled the 'Mad Mullah' by the British, he rose up against colonial rule in 1899 and established a Dervish state. Despite several Anglo-Ethiopian expeditions against him, Abdullah Hassan continued to resist until 1920, when he and his followers were finally defeated.
