Captain Walter Bagot-Chester's sketch map of the front line near Gaza, 13 September 1917

This map is from Bagot-Chester's war diary that covers his Middle Eastern service with the 3rd Queen Alexandra's Own Gurkha Rifles from October 1916 to 1 December 1917.

He arrived in Egypt in October 1916 and was posted to the Suez Canal defences with 2nd/3rd Gurkha Rifles. He then joined the 3rd/3rd Gurkhas for the advance on Gaza in October-November 1917, where he was awarded the Military Cross for leading a raid on Outpost Hill.

The following March Bagot-Chester was mortally wounded by shellfire at Hill 1263 near Mughair Ahmed while supervising the consolidation of a recently gained position. He was later buried at Ramleh War Cemetery.
