Studies for the oil painting, 'Landrécies, 25 August 1914', 1914 (c)

Charcoal and white wash drawing by William Barns Wollen (1857-1936), 1914 (c).

Studies of British infantry in hand-to-hand combat with German soldiers. Wollen's oil painting of the Battle of Landrecies is part of the National Army Museum's collection (NAM. 1959-11-304-1).

The street-fighting in the outskirts of Landrécies, a town north-west of Le Cateau in Northern France, took place during the night of 25-26 August 1914, in the early part of World War One (1914-1918). The combatants were the advancing German 14th Infantry Brigade and the 4th (Guards) Brigade, withdrawing during the retreat from Mons.

From a sketchbook of 28 sheets of charcoal and white wash drawings by William Barns Wollen.
