Letters of Captain John Lucie Blackman, The Coldstream Guards, 1812-1815
This bound volume contains 109 letters written by Captain John Lucie Blackman to his parents, describing his journey to Lisbon, the progress of Wellington's army across Spain and into France and his service in Belgium from 9 March 1815 until his death at the Battle of Waterloo in June. Blackman describes the marches of the troops, the noise of battle from Badajoz, the attack on Salamanca, the Siege of Burgos, life in winter quarters, the crossing of the French frontier and the Battle of St Jea de Luz.
There are also five printed maps of the Peninsular, annotated to show Blackman's route, and watercolour and pen and ink sketches of his grave at Hougoumont.
