Bit boss, 3rd (Prince of Wales's) Dragoon Guards, 1902-1922
Cast brass and white metal badge with Prince of Wales' feathers and coronet, within a garter bearing the unit title, 'Third Dragoon Guards', surmounted by a King's Crown.
Bit bosses were used to decorate the bits on officers' horses, which were also known as chargers. This one has a King's Crown, introduced in 1902 and would have continued in use until the Regiment was amalgamated in 1922.
The amalgamated Regiment was one of the last to mechanise in 1938 when the horses were finally removed from the daily life of the Regiment.
