Luxor Temple is a large temple complex on the east bank of the Nile River in Luxor (formally known as Thebes). Luxor Temple is dedicated to the rejuvenation of kingship and may have been where many Egyptian pharaohs were crowned. Excavations of the Temple began in 1884 by Professor Gaston Maspero and continued to be carried out sporadically until the 1960s.
