Embroidery relating to the Middlesex Regiment, 1917 (c)

This textile embroidery was produced by Private Arthur William Mackenzie of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) whilst convalescing. Unfortunately his service record does not appear to have survived so we cannot be certain of the injury that resulted in his hospitalisation. His family believe that he was gassed during World War One (1914-1918).

The work is embroidered with the crest of the Middlesex Regiment, 'The Die-Hards', on a blue ground. The Regiment's Peninsular War battle honour for Albuera is wrongly dated 'Albuhera May 16th 1812'; it was actually fought in 1811. The crest is flanked by two pennant staffs bearing battle honours of the Middlesex Regiment, up to and including the Battle of Cambrai, in 1917. The textile is bordered by embroidered bunting depicting the national flags of the Allies.
