Volume of Sikh sacred writings, Nitnem Gutka, 1914

Moslems, Hindus and Sikhs served with the Indian Corps on the Western Front from October 1914. While the infantry were withdrawn to Mesopotamia in December 1915, most of the cavalry remained on the Western Front until 1918.

This small volume contains Sikh daily prayers and would have been read by a Sikh soldier as a source of courage and strength while in a foreign land. The Indian Army went to great lengths to allow its soldiers to maintain their religious traditions during the war.
