The 22nd Punjabis was an infantry regiment raised in 1857 during the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) as the 11th Regiment of Punjab Infantry. The regiment fought in China in 1860 and was then renumbered twice in 1861, becoming the 26th Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry and then the 22nd Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry. In 1864 the regiment became the 22nd (Punjab) Regiment of Bengal Native Infantry and fought in the 2nd Afghan War (1878-1880). The word 'Native' was dropped from its title in 1885 and the regiment became the 22nd Punjab Infantry in 1901. It was renamed the 22nd Punjabis in 1903 during further reform of the Indian Army. It fought in Mesopotamia during World War One (1914-1918), returning to India in time for the 3rd Afghan War (1919) In 1922 the regiment was amalgamated with five other units. The 22nd's new designation was as the 3rd Battalion, 14th Punjab Regiment.
