Drawing fodder at Filayieh, June 1916

Photograph, World War One, Mesopotamia, 1916.

Indian soldiers load fodder on to a horse and cart at Filayieh in Mesopotamia. Horses, mules and camels were used in huge numbers during the Mesopotamian campaign. Although they needed little upkeep when compared to the motor vehicles of the time, they required huge supplies of fodder.

From a collection of 265 photographs compiled by Major W Leith-Ross, Indian Army Staff.
