Escapement clock, 103rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Bombay Fusiliers), 1875 (c)

Silver, made by Stephen Smith and Son, London, 1875 (c). The case, hallmarked London, 1875-1876. The clock is manufactured by Dent, London.

A shooting prize from the Mess Silver of the 103rd Regiment of Foot (Royal Bombay Fusiliers), 1875.

The clock face is marked in Roman numerals in black upon a machine-finished plain white metal ground. Decoration on the case includes a silver wreath and flaming grenade. Two kneeling Fusiliers in service dress flank the clock which is surmounted by the figure of a tiger. The wooden base is bound with silver, supported by two prone silver elephants, with a central inscribed shield over crossed colours.

This silver clock was awarded as a prize in an inter-regimental shooting competition in 1875. The winning officers are named as Lieutenants Nott, Pidcock, Hinchley,Dick and Coningham. The103rd Regiment was a former East India Company regimentwhich had been transferred to the British Army in 1862.
