Sudanese forces, 1898 (c)

Photograph, 2nd Sudan War (1896-1898), 1898 (c).

Sudanese soldiers prepare for battle. Most are armed with rifles but one man wields a sword and shield. The drummer in the foreground plays a Nihas, or Nahas, an object of great importance in Sudanese culture; the ownership of which is a mark of respect and social standing.
