Remington 11 mm single shot rolling block rifle, 1898 (c)

The rifle, in relic condition, is reputed to have been recovered from the Battle of Omdurman after the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1898) in 1898.

A plaque on the butt of the rifle is inscribed, 'Dervish Remington Rifle picked up on the Feld of Omdurman, 2nd. September 1898, this rifle was taken at the Destruction of Hicks Pasha's Army by the Dervishes. Given by Major Wilfrid Marshal'.

The Remington Company secured a lucrative contract to supply the Egyptian Army with modern rifles in 1869. Sudanese Mahdist forces captured a significant amount of military equipment, including thousands of these Remington rifles, after their victory over General William Hicks's Egyptian force at the Battle of Kashgai (Shaykan) in 1883. More rifles were captured after the capture of Khartoum in 1885. Many of these weapons would have still been in use by Mahdist forces during the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1898).

The 'Major Wilfrid Marshal' mentioned in the inscription on the plaque added to the rifle may be Major Wilfred George Howard Marshall (1864-1905), Grenadier Guards, who was present at Omdurman in 1899.
