Medal with, on the obverse, a cross pattee within a wreath, with a phoenix rising from flames in the centre, with the inscription in Greek on the arms of the cross, 'Defending the Fatherland', on crossed swords; on the reverse the inscription in Greek, 'Greece 1916-1917'; suspended on a yellow ribbon with two black, vertical stripes.
British-born Olive Miles volunteered with the French Red Cross as a nursing orderly and ambulance driver in Serbia and Greece during World War One (1914-1918). The Allied Forces on the Macedonian Front were led by the French and included personnel from Serbia, Greece, Romania and the British Empire. Fighting against them was the Bulgarian Army supported by other Central Powers.
The Military Medal, designed by French sculptor, Andres Rivaud, was created by the Greek National Defence Government in October 1916. It was adopted as the Medal of Military Merit in 1917. It was categorised in four classes.
