'Scene of Great Battles at Albert, 1917-18'

Photograph, World War One, Western Front, 1918 (c).

Albert was a town in the Somme region of France, held by British forces throughout much of the First World War. The town was reduced to ruins by artillery bombardment during the War. German forces took the town during their Spring offensive in April 1918. Three months later, after Allied bombardment caused yet more destruction, the town changed hands once again.
